What is responsible decision-making?
Responsible decision-making is about learning to make choices on their own or with support and to be responsible for their choices and actions.
The NEL Framework outlines the following knowledge, skills and dispositions as part of Competency 5: Take Responsibility for Their Actions.
Competency 5: Take Responsibility for Their Actions
5.1 Learn to make choices on their own or with support |
5.2 Learn to take ownership and be responsible for their actions |
Why is responsible decision-making important?
Responsible decision-making enables children to develop an awareness of the effect or consequences of their choices and actions. As they reflect on the consequences of their actions, they can learn how to develop a sense of responsibility and make better decisions when similar situations occur. They also learn to apply moral reasoning and sound values-based judgements in the choices they make.
How might children demonstrate responsible decision-making?
Here are some examples of how children might demonstrate responsible decision-making through their actions, speech and behaviour:
Making decisions on everyday situations (e.g., choice of book, materials, or playmates)
Discussing and deciding on rules to make the classroom environment conducive for all
Thinking back on their actions and considering how they can make better decisions in the future
